SIMS (School of Information Management and Systems)

(Michael Buckland

  • Social Technologies Group

  • Building an Internet Library

  • Metadata Research Program

  • (Peter Lyman, Woren Sack, Buckland

An innovation of “Information Science” From“Document Studies” to “Knowledge Studies”

Information by itself is not important. The importance lies in how people relate themselves to information. Thereby, the creation, dissemination, and utilization of information are of concern in information studies.

The foundation of information studies is "document studies" because documents in a sense of  " Information-as-thing" that is regarded as signifying: books, records, data, speech, signs, symbolic objects.

As you know, we move forward into the so-called "Ubiquitous Society", which means that information is too general in its usage.

It is not necessary to argue over what the phrase "Information " means.

Therefore, I try to propose the redefinition of " Information Science" and to focus on the more strict boundaries of our field and to change the name from "Information Science" to "Document Studies". Moreover  "Documentation Science", which is more scientific discipline based on the quantitative theories and formal algorithms regarding document processing must be discussed.

The scope of "Documentation Science" is based on inheritances and traditions such as bibliography, documentation, information retrieval, librarianship, social studies of information, communications, archives, information systems and publishing.

Also, "Documentation Science" has been deeply influenced by "Computer Science", which has been applying algorithmic, logical, mathematical, and mechanical techniques such as DBMS, Artificial Intelligence.

In the age of the Internet, documents are increasingly digital and the Internet reduces difference between internal and external sources. Much of the work associated with “Digital Documentation” is of broadly concern.

In  "Documentation Science" the importance of knowledge has always been known. "Knowledge Studies" based on Documentation Science should be needed.

I would like to thank Dr. Michael Buckland of the School of Information Management and Systems, University of California at Berkeley who provided source materials that were used throughout this work.
